Waikato Regional Council’s vision is of the Waikato “Competing globally, caring locally”. It puts into a nutshell our focus on ensuring we have a strong, competitive economy whilst carrying out local actions that protect our environment and our reputation in international markets.
The council’s ongoing involvement with the Ballance Farm Environment Awards is part of that work. We’re also working hard with all our other partners – including iwi, the agriculture sector and farmers generally – to achieve our aims.
Collectively, we made some good progress in 2010-11 with, for example, higher levels of farmer compliance with dairy effluent management rules.
One of our challenges during 2011-12 and beyond is to develop new policy which better protects the land and water resources which underpin our economy and way of life.
I look forward to working with the New Zealand Farm Environment Trust and others in the agriculture sector towards the achievement of this important goal.
